Min. Charles Okello Engola Shot Dead By UPDF Guard In Kyanja

A UPDF guard has killed the Minister of State for Housing, Charles Okello Engola.

Engola, 65, was shot from his home in Kyanja, a Kampala suburb.

According to eyewitnesses, the guard later fired shots in the air before taking his own life in a salon in the neighbourhood.

“My neighbor, Hon. Okello Engola, has been shot dead,” said former lawmaker, Latif Ssebagala Sengendo.

The motive for the murder remains unclear as some eyewitnesses said the UPDF guard accused the minister of mistreatment and poor salary pay from the Uganda People’s Defense Forces

Photo from the crime scene show Engola’s motionless body lying in a pool of blood at his home.

The retired Colonel was the MP for Oyam North and previously served as Minister of State for Defence.

While in the military, Engola was the commander of UPDF 501 Brigade, headquartered at Opit, in Gulu District.

The brigade played a role in fighting the Lord’s Resistance Army. He was promoted to the rank of colonel and retired from the military in 2007.
