A probation Police constable and a bodaboda rider have been crushed in Lira city following a crash involving three vehicles and a motorcycle.
According to a Police report, rider Douglas Oculi, a resident of Amuloakere village, Adok sub-county in Dokolo district, died on the spot, while his passenger, Moreen Kakuuru, 26, a police officer attached to Lira city east division died while being treated at Lira Regional Referral Hospital.
The incident, which is registered at Lira Central Police Station under reference number TAR 26/2023, occurred on Saturday at about 7:00 pm at Gwengabara on Lira-Soroti road.
Police said both motor vehicles Nissan registration number UBF524L and Toyota wish UBM 391M were coming from Soroti side towards Lira city when at Gwengabara village, the driver of the Nissan, Mathew Okujja, was trying to overtake the Wish and, in the process, ended up knocking the Wish and losing control of the vehicle.
He then knocked another vehicle registration number UFU 905T, which was coming from the opposite direction also trying to overtake a trailer registration number KBH 264R/ZD 0936M/Benz.
The rider on motorcycle registration number: UFU 905T and his passenger fell in the middle of the road and the moving trailer ran over him, killing him instantly.
The passenger was rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital where an attempt to save her life was futile as she succumbed to the injuries she sustained.
All the motor vehicles involved in the crash are parked at Lira Central Police Station pending inspection by the Police Inspector of Vehicles.
The bodies were conveyed to the Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
By the time of filing this report, the two drivers were being held at Lira Central Police Station as inquiries continue.
