Kenyan National Anthony Ngigi is locked up at Luwero central police station for the alleged theft of 22 million Shillings from the director of the Catholic church education center. Ngigi who hails from Mangu village in Kiambu County, Thika district in Kenya is accused of stealing money from Peter Ndoodhe, the director of Emmaus Center, a training center for disciples and evangelists run by the Catholic church in Butanza training center, Katikamu sub-county.

He currently lives in Bweyogerere in Wakiso district. Patrick Lule, the Acting Savannah Region Police Spokesperson says that Ngigi and others at large reportedly broke into Ndoodhe’s vehicle near Kikoma hardware in Wobulenzi town and made off with the said money. Lule explains that Ngigi and others trailed Ndoodhe from Centenary Bank Wobulenzi branch where he had withdrawn the money.

He says after discovering that the money was missing, Ndoodhe reported the matter to Wobulenzi police station leading to Ngigi’s arrest with the help of CCTV footage near the hardware. Lule says that police tracked the vehicle that Ngigi and his accomplices hired to execute their mission.

According to police, this is not the first time Ngigi is being arrested for stealing money and targeting people from banks. In April this year, Ngigi was arrested together with others for the theft of 20 million Shillings from a businessman in Luwero town.

Police recovered the money and presented him before the Luwero Magistrate’s Court for theft. He was released on bail but never reported back to the court. Police now intend to present him in court on two cases of theft.

Ngigi’s arrest comes amidst a public outcry about the rampant cases of theft targeting people from banks in Wobulenzi. According to the 2021 Annual Crime Report, Luwero district ranked fifth among districts with the highest number of theft cases after registering 723.
