Renowned activist Kakwenza Rukirabshaija, who has been in detention at Kitalya Mini Max Prison since January 11th, 2022, has Tuesday morning been granted Shs500,000 cash bail by the Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate.
Kakwenza, who was charged with computer misuses and disturbing the peace of President Yoweri Museveni and Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has however been directed by court not to discuss the matter in the media because it will result into automatic cancellation of his bail.
The suspect, who is still incarcerated at Kitalya prison as he awaits his release order, appeared for the bail hearing via zoom and was represented in court by his lawyers led by Eron Kiiza.
One of the people who stood surety for him is the National Unity Platform (NUP) Secretary General counsel Lewis Rubongoya, who tweeted thus shortly after his application was granted by court;
“Activist and author, Kakwenza Rukirabashaija released on bail by Buganda Road Magistrates Court. Glad he can now go and get better treatment of his torture injuries. Honored to be one of his sureties. He represents a generation that is ready to fight for freedom at all costs.”
Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Douglas Singiza has since adjourned the matter to February 01st, 2022, when Kakwenza will reappear in court for further mentioning of his case.
Kakwenza’s woes stem from his social media posts in which he allegedly belittled President Museveni and First Son, Lt. Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
He was arrested from his home in Kisaasi on December 28th, 2021 by armed plain clothed men and was kept in a yet to be identified detention facility for several days until he was presented in court on January 11th, 2022 and thereafter remanded to Kitalya prison.
